You are warmly invited to this year's CCLAS (Centre for Contemporary Latin American Studies) one-day cultural colloquium, 'Book Culture in Buenos Aires: Growing Readerships'.
In addition to a keynote in Spanish by Claudia Piñeiro, Argentinian novelist and best-selling author of 'Thursday Night Widows', 'Betty Boop', 'All Yours', and 'A Crack in the Wall', speakers will cover a range of topics including:
- The Book Industry in Claudia Piñeiro’s Betibú (Ligia Bezerra)
- Bestsellers and Betrayal: Satirizing the Book Industry in Claudia Piñeiro’s ‘La muerte y la canoa’ and ‘Bendito aire de Buenos Aires’ (Fiona Mackintosh)
- New Ways of Reading and Understanding: Claudia Piñeiro on Disability and the Female Body (Patricia Varas)
- Argentina’s Billiken (founded 1919): From Children’s Magazines and Books to Post-Print Culture (Lauren Rea and Euhen Matarozzo)
- Growing Readerships for Argentinian (and Latin American) Fiction in English Translation (Carolina Orloff, Charco Press)

Celebrating 100 years of Spanish at Edinburgh
2019 marks the centenary of the Spanish degree and the establishment of the department of Spanish at the University of Edinburgh. Today, we have grown into a large community of teachers, researchers and students in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS). We offer a range of undergraduate degrees, MSc by Research degrees, and PhDs, as well as teaching on interdisciplinary masters programmes. Please do join us for events and activities over the course of the year, including the Main University Library’s first ever multi-lingual exhibition, ‘Conectando: Scottish Encounters with Spanish & Portuguese’ (5th April to 29th June 2019).
